The Walimah: Etiquette of the Wedding Feast
A walimah is food, joy, and an invitation to be answered. Nine gentle adab that make your feast blessed and generous, from intention to answering the call.
A Feast, an Intention, and an Invitation
A walimah is not merely a laden table. It is joy that is shared, an invitation that is extended, and an intention its host is rewarded for. And so Islam gave it adab that keep the joy graceful, the spending blessed, and the guests' hearts content.
Islam prescribed the walimah, the meal made on the day of marriage, and gave it adab the host should know, so that he earns reward and falls into nothing forbidden.
Nine Adab of the Feast
These are the feast's adab, arranged; we relay them briefly:
- A sincere intention. Intend good in your spending and effort, and you are rewarded for both.
- Within your means. Do not overburden yourself; offer what is easy, without hardship or display.
- Invite kin, neighbours and friends. In inviting them there is family ties kept, kindness to the neighbour, and love increased.
- Do not favour the rich and leave out the poor. That breaks the needy one's heart, and is not the way of Islam.
- Avoid extravagance. Food that overflows into the bin is wealth you will be asked about; moderation is more blessed.
- Keep it free of wrongdoing. Let your joy be wholesome, free of anything unbecoming.
- Answer the invitation. Whoever is invited, let him respond; answering gladdens the host and keeps affection alive.
- The fasting guest attends. One who is fasting still comes and prays for the hosts, and may hold back from the food.
- Excuse yourself from what is wrong. If a feast holds what is unbecoming, there is no blame in staying away.
On Extravagance and Moderation
The finest feasts are the most generous, not the most costly. Moderation in food is a clear Qur'anic adab:
And eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess.
Qur'an, al-A'raf 7:31

Among the firmest adab of the walimah is answering an invitation addressed to you; in it is a gladdening of the host's heart and a keeping of affection between you:
When one of you is invited to a wedding feast, let him attend it.
