Visiting: The Adab of a Gracious Guest
A visit is a bond and an affection, and it has adab that keep it beautiful. From seeking permission to a good stay.
The Adab of Seeking Permission
Before you enter a home, seek permission and give greetings; that is the first adab of visiting, and Allah taught it to His servants:
O you who have believed, do not enter houses other than your own until you have asked permission and greeted their occupants.
Qur'an, al-Nur 24:27
Verified against the Mus’hafIslam gave visiting adab that keep it beautiful, from seeking permission to a good stay, by which hearts are joined and the visitor falls into no discomfort.
The Adab of the Visitor
- Choose a suitable time. And do not visit so often that you become a burden.
- Seek permission before entering. And greet the household.
- Lower your gaze. And guard the privacy of the home and all it holds.
- Sit where you are shown. Do not take the head of the gathering uninvited.
- Lower your voice. A home is a place of rest for its people.
- Do not stay so long you cause discomfort. The best visit leaves hearts still longing.
- Thank them and take leave. A gracious farewell is part of a gracious visit.
