Seeking Permission: The Adab of Entering Homes
Before the door is knocked there is adab: choosing the time, the salaam, asking three times, and accepting an apology. The etiquette of seeking permission, arranged simply.
A Door Knocked With Adab
When you invite your guests to your home, they come to you seeking permission; for entering homes has an adab in which Allah revealed a Qur'an that is recited.
O you who have believed, do not enter houses other than your own until you have asked permission and greeted their people.
Qur'an, al-Nur 24:27

Islam gave seeking permission an etiquette that preserves the sanctity of homes and protects their people, from the salaam to awaiting permission.
The Salaam, Then Permission
Among the adab of seeking permission is that the guest begin with the salaam and then ask permission, and that he identify himself if asked, not merely saying "It is I"; the salaam is the key of entering.
And Allah made the salaam before entering an adab and a blessing:
But when you enter houses, give greetings of peace upon each other, a greeting from Allah, blessed and good.
Qur'an, al-Nur 24:61

And of the adab is that the guest ask permission three times, with a pause between each; if he is granted permission he enters, and if not he departs without reproach.
Seeking permission is three times; if you are granted permission, enter, and if not, then return.
Reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim, from Abu Musa al-Ash'ari

And if the guest is not granted permission, or the host apologises, the adab is that he return content, without awkwardness or resentment; that is purer for him.
And if you are told to go back, then go back; it is purer for you.
Qur'an, al-Nur 24:28
