Seeking Knowledge: The Adab of the Student and Honouring the Teacher

The invi2 team · 3 min read

Knowledge is elevation and light, and a path to Paradise, and it has its adab: sincerity, honouring the teacher, recording it in writing, acting on it and spreading it. The etiquette of seeking knowledge, gathered and made simple.

Knowledge Is an Elevation With Its Own Adab

On the day of your graduation, years of late nights and striving are crowned; and knowledge in Islam is elevation and light, by which Allah raises its people in rank.

Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.

Qur'an, al-Mujadalah 58:11

And because it holds this rank, the scholars gave it adab by which the student refines himself and his conduct with his teacher; we have chosen for you those that adorn the joy of graduation.

The scholars gave the seeking of knowledge adab within the student and with his teacher; whoever is sincere, refined, and acts on his knowledge attains the rank of the people of knowledge.

Sincerity and the Path to Paradise

The first adab of the student is to make his intention sincere for Allah, seeking knowledge for His sake and the benefit of people, not for show or boasting; whoever treads this path, Allah eases for him a path to Paradise.

Whoever treads a path seeking knowledge upon it, Allah will ease for him a path to Paradise.

Honouring the Teacher and Recording Knowledge

Among the noblest adab of the student is honouring his teacher and conducting himself well with him, asking well without contentiousness, and recording what he learns in writing and ordering it.

Honouring the people of merit and knowledge is from the guidance of Islam, and they hold a rank in hearts by which Allah distinguishes them:

It is only those who have knowledge among His servants that fear Allah.

Qur'an, Fatir 35:28

Acting on Knowledge and Spreading It

An adab without which knowledge is not complete: that the student act on his knowledge and then spread it and not conceal it; for beneficial knowledge is an ongoing charity that continues after its owner.

When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: an ongoing charity, knowledge that is benefited from, or a righteous child who prays for him.
