Neighbourliness: A Right and an Honour for the Neighbour
The neighbour has a great right, which Gabriel enjoined upon the Prophet ﷺ: refraining from harm, honouring, and sharing in joy and grief. The etiquette of neighbourliness, arranged and made simple.
A Neighbour With a Right
When you open your shop or gather your loved ones, your neighbours are the first to share it with you; and the neighbour in Islam has a right Allah joined to good treatment of parents and kin.
Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good ... and to the neighbour who is near, and the neighbour who is a stranger, and the companion at your side.

Gabriel's Counsel Concerning the Neighbour
So great is the right of the neighbour that the Prophet ﷺ thought the neighbour would be made an heir, from how much Gabriel enjoined him concerning the neighbour.
Gabriel kept enjoining me concerning the neighbour until I thought he would make him an heir.

Among the adab of neighbourliness is honouring the neighbour and refraining from harming him; that is a sign of belief in Allah and the Last Day.
Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him honour his neighbour.

And of the completeness of the neighbour's right is that you share his joys and sorrows, inviting him to your joy and standing with him in his hardship; the near neighbour is the most deserving of your kindness.
The Prophet ﷺ urged tending to the neighbour with kindness, even the smallest:
O Muslim women, let no neighbour think little of what she gives her neighbour, even a sheep's trotter.
