In every joy of yours there is a right owed to your parents: obedience and gentle speech, lowering the wing of humility, and a devotion that does not cease after they pass. The etiquette of honouring parents, arranged and made easy.

A Devotion That Adorns Joy

On the day of your wedding, your graduation, and every joy of yours, your parents' eyes are the first to rejoice; and honouring them is a right Allah joined to His worship and made among the most beloved of deeds.

And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age with you, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor repel them, but speak to them a noble word.

Qur'an, al-Isra 17:23

The adab of honouring them, in their life and after their death, has been arranged; we have chosen for you those that adorn your joy with them.

Islam gave the honouring of parents an etiquette in their life and after their death; whoever honours his parents is blessed in his lifespan and his children.

Honouring Them Is Among the Most Beloved of Deeds

Honouring one's parents is no mere added virtue; it is among the deeds most beloved to Allah after prayer, which the Prophet ﷺ placed before striving in the way of Allah.

I asked the Prophet ﷺ: Which deed is most beloved to Allah? He said: Prayer at its time. I said: Then which? He said: Honouring one's parents.

Gentle Speech and Humility

Among the adab of devotion is gentle speech, lowering the wing of humility, being humble before them, and praying for mercy for them as they raised you when you were small.

And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say: My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was small.

Qur'an, al-Isra 17:24

How much a good word and a glance of mercy gladden parents on the day of your joy.

A Devotion That Does Not Cease

And honouring parents does not cease with their passing; it continues through praying for them, fulfilling their pledges, and honouring their loved ones and keeping ties with their kin.

Indeed, among the greatest acts of devotion is that a man keep ties with the people his father loved.

Reported by Muslim, from Ibn Umar
