Joy With Its Own Adab
Gatherings are sweetened by cheer and a light spirit, and the Prophet ﷺ would joke with his companions and bring them ease; yet humour has an adab that keeps it from turning to harm.
The adab of joking has been well arranged; we have gathered for you those that adorn your gatherings of joy.
Islam gave humour an etiquette by which it remains ease and not harm: truthfulness, moderation, and cheer without excess.
Humour Without Falsehood
The first adab of humour is that it not be through lying; the joking of the Prophet ﷺ was all truth, and he warned against one who lies to make people laugh.
Indeed, I joke, yet I say nothing but the truth.

Among the adab is that humour be little and gentle, not indulged in excessively, and that one not joke in a place of seriousness nor with one who does not accept it; for much laughter hardens the heart.
Do not laugh much, for much laughter deadens the heart.
