Giving Gifts: The Adab of Offering and Receiving

The invi2 team · 2 min read

A gift is a message of love without words. How to offer it so it reaches the heart, and how to receive it with grace and gratitude.

A Message of Love Without Words

A gift is measured not by its price but by the affection and respect it carries. Islam made it a cause for love to grow between people:

Exchange gifts, and you will love one another.

Reported by al-Bukhari in al-Adab al-Mufrad

Islam made the gift a cause for love to grow between people, and gave it adab in giving and receiving, by which the giver keeps his reward and affection reaches the heart.

The Adab of Giving

  1. Purify the intention. A gift is affection, not a bid for gain or a debt to hold over someone.
  2. Begin with kin and neighbours. They have the first claim on your kindness.
  3. Choose what fits and pleases. Pick a suitable gift, and a suitable moment for it.
  4. Never disdain the small. A little given with love is better than much given without heart.
  5. Do not refuse a gift without cause. Accepting it gladdens the one who gave.
  6. Repay it. Return kindness with its like, or better, if you can.
  7. Never follow it with reminders of your favour. Reproach erases the reward and wounds the receiver.
