Engagement Invitation Wording: Formulas You Can Copy and Adapt

The invi2 team · 4 min read

Before the theme and the colours, an invitation begins with its words. Here are ready formulas for an engagement, a milkah, a nikah and a katb al-kitab, short and long, with the right order for names, time and place.

Who Is Inviting? The Line That Sets the Whole Tone

The first question an invitation answers is not "when" but "who invites". A guest reads the host's name to know how to reply and in what capacity to attend.

In the Gulf, the invitation usually opens with the groom's father or the family: "Abu Fahd and his family are honoured to invite you to his son's engagement". In Egypt and the Levant the couple often invite in their own names: "Sarah and Ahmed would love you to join them".

The rule is simple: write the host's name as your guests actually address them, not as it appears on official papers. An invitation is a conversation among family and friends, not an administrative notice.

In invi2 the host's name sits on its own line above the couple's names, so a guest reads it first, exactly as on a printed card.

A Ready Engagement Formula: Formal and Warm

The formal version suits neighbours, colleagues and guests of standing:

"[Host] is honoured to invite you to the engagement of his daughter [bride] to [groom], on [day] the [date] at [time], at [venue]. Your presence would honour us."

The warm version suits close family and friends:

"With great joy we share dear news: [bride] and [groom] are taking their first step. Please be with us on [date] at [time], at [venue]."

Notice that both put the names before the time, and the time before the place. That order is not decoration: a guest wants to know who they are celebrating, then whether they are free, then where to go.

Wording for a Milkah, a Nikah and a Katb al-Kitab

The name changes with the country while the meaning stays the same: the announcement of the marriage contract. In the Gulf it is the milkah, in Egypt and the Levant katb al-kitab, and in Iraq and much of the Arab world aqd qiran.

Use the name your guests actually use, not the one that sounds most formal. A guest who reads "milkah invitation" knows at once what is being asked of them; an unfamiliar term makes them hesitate.

A ready formula for a nikah or katb al-kitab:

"By the grace of Allah, [host] is honoured to invite you to the marriage contract of [groom] and [bride], on [date] after the [maghrib] prayer, at [venue]."

And if the contract falls on one day and the celebration on another, do not send two separate invitations and tire your guest. In invi2 you add more than one time and venue inside a single invitation, each with its own details, so your guest sees both in one link.

Short Engagement Wording for WhatsApp

When you send the invitation on WhatsApp, the message arrives before the card. Keep it to two lines; every detail already lives inside the link.

"Our joy is not complete without you. [Name]'s engagement on [date], details here."

"Please join us for the engagement of [name] and [name]. Details and RSVP in the link."

"Happy news we wanted you to hear from us: [name] is engaged. Details inside."

Avoid cramming the date, the venue and a phone number into the message itself; a long message gets half read. Let the link carry the details and the message carry the feeling.

invi2 sends that message to each guest individually from one Excel file, so you never copy and paste a hundred times, and no guest sees the rest of your list.

Beyond the Words: Time, Place and the Reply

The finest wording loses its value if a guest is unsure of the time or the place. Write the date in both the Hijri and Gregorian calendars if your guests use both, and name the weekday rather than only a number; people remember "Thursday" faster than a figure.

Write the venue by the name it is actually known by, and attach a map location. A written address is enough for someone who knows the city, and not enough for a guest travelling in.

Finally, ask for a reply kindly: "we would love to know if you will honour us". A gracious request is answered; a curt instruction is postponed.

In invi2 both calendars appear on the card, the guest opens the map with one tap, and confirms attendance with no sign-in and no app.
